Anthraquinone derivatives are new. Anthraquinone derivative is of formula (I). m and n = 1-20; X and Z = NH or O; p = 0 or 1; R1, R'1, R5-R10 and R'5-R'10 = H, halogen, 1-8C hydrocarbon, OH, OR11, OCOR11, NHOR11, NHCOOR11, NHCONHR11, N(R2)R3, SO3H. SONHR11 or NHSOR11; and R2-R4, R'4 and R11 = H or 1-8C hydrocarbon, preferably where m = n = 1-12, X is NH, p is 1, R7-R10 and R'7-R'10 are all H, R'4 = R4 = H -1 1-8C hydrocarbon, R1 is H, halogen, 1-8C hydrocarbon or NR-2R3, R2 and R3 are H or 1-8C hydrocarbon, and R5 = R'5 and R6 = R'6 and all are H, halogen, OH or 1-8C hydrocarbon. Independent claims are also included for: (1) a composition containing (I); and (2) the preparation of the compounds (I).
