PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a device for controlling a multi-cylinder engine capable of highly maintaining the basic performance thereof even when a variation in compression ratio occurs between cylinders due to the production error of engine component parts. SOLUTION: A piston projected amount hi representing the amount of projection of the tip part of each piston from the upper end surface of a cylinder block at the top dead center of each piston is measured for each cylinder when the engine is assembled, and the measured values are stored in a nonvolatile cylinder piston projected amount memory. While the engine is running, first the stored piston projected amount hi is read (Step S10) and a next combustion cylinder is discriminated (Step S20). Then the fuel injection amount correction amount qi and the fuel injection timing correction amount ai of the applicable cylinder are calculated according to the piston projected amount hi of the applicable cylinder (Step S30), and the fuel injection amount Qi and fuel injection timing Ai are individually corrected for each cylinder (Step S40).
