PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an eddy-current speed reducer which is relatively small in size and weight and does not require power for switching braking and non- braking. SOLUTION: A large number of cores 3a protruded from the peripheral portion of an annular yoke 3 supported on a non-rotating portion are opposed to a brake drum 2 which is coupled with a rotary shaft 4 and comprises conductors. Electromagnetic coils 6 are wound on the cores 3a to form electromagnets 10. Magnets 7 are embedded in portions in the yoke 3 of which the portions are different in rotational phases from the cores 3a.
