PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a separator for an alkaline battery, causing little self- discharge, keeping excellent retention and having high strength, that is, having capability of making performance compatible with strength, even though its sulfonation rate is comparatively low. SOLUTION: In this separator for an alkaline battery and a method for manufacturing it, a non-woven fabric 2 made mainly of a polyorefine based resin having a 20 wt.% or less content of low density polyethylene easily deteriorated by oxidization is used, while the polyorefine based resin is formed of mainly polypropylene, the nonwoven fabric is sulfonated by uniformly heat- treating it by a liquid sulfonating agent such as sulfuric acid 5 under a high temperature condition of 120 deg.C or more, the only entangled part of the fabric is fused by processing the non-woven fabric by a pressure roller 6 in a heating condition by a high temperature, and thereby, a quantity of an acidic group which is not neutralized after dipping the fabric in an alkaline liquid is in a range of 5×10<4> -1.1×10<-2> mol/m<2> .
