PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the fluctuation of output waveform, read noise and Barkhausen noise (generically called as waveform fluctuation) by giving the shape condition of a magnetic domain control film generating a magnetic do main controlling magnetic field that a free magnetic layer becomes a single magnetic domain even in a spin-valve type giant magneto-resistive head having any width of the free magnetic layer. SOLUTION: A magnetic domain control running-on length Oh defined by a distance from the upper end part of the giant magneto-resistive stacked body to the tip of the magnetic domain control film, and an overmilling amount OM defined by the distance between the upper end part of a non-magnetic gap layer in contact with a lower shield layer and the lowermost part of a base film existing under the magnetic domain control film, are settled to have the ranges of Oh-16.8×OM<=0.0842×Twr+7.70 and also OM<=10.0, with respect to the free magnetic layer width Twr. Units of nm are adopted for all of these expressions.
