The invention concerns a device for controlling the movements of a bumper mounted on a motor vehicle structure, comprising at least a spring and a magneto-rheological fluid shock absorber (4) with electrically controlled damping, mounted between the bumper (3) and the structure (2), and control means (7) based on at least an information from at least a sensor (9-12) on the operating conditions of the vehicle or of an element of said vehicle and delivering an electrical instruction to said shock absorber so as to modify the viscosity of said fluid on the basis of variations of said information concerning operating conditions.
