The method involves detecting obstructions in front of the vehicle using a location system within the vehicle. The electronic circuits compute a probability of a collision (P) from the position data (D) and initiate one or more staged reactions accordingly. At least one of the reactions is a preparatory measure that accelerates the conversion of a command (B) that may be output later to decelerate the vehicle without itself having a significant decelerating effect.
