1,202,239. p-Phenylphenol. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 20 Sept., 1967 [22 Sept., 1966], No. 42873/67. Heading C2C. p-Phenylphenol is prepared by the dehydrogenation of p-cyclohexenyl phenol by heating it to a temperature from 140‹ to 280‹ C. in the presence of a stoichiometric excess of sulphur or selenium. Preferably the p.cyclohexenylphenol used as starting material is prepared by condensing two moles of phenol with one mole of cyclohexanone in the presence of a strong acid at 40-120‹ C. to give 1,1-bis- (p.hydroxyphenyl )-cyclohexane and heating this at 140-300‹ C. in the presence of an esterification catalyst, e.g. an alkali metal hydroxide or potassium acid sulphate.
