PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a data recorder that detects a fault in the travel speed of a magnetic tape. SOLUTION: A recording head 12 and a reproduction head 14 are placed at a prescribed interval along a tape travel direction of a magnetic tape 10. The reproduction head 14 reproduces data recorded by the recording head 12 and supplies the data to an error detection circuit 16. The error detection circuit 16 compares a reference time calculated from the prescribed interval and a correct speed with a data reproduction time and supplies an error signal to a drive circuit 18 when the detection circuit 16 discriminates that the drive speed of the magnetic tape 10 is deviated from the proper speed to stop the magnetic tape 10.
