The aim of the invention is to provide a device for actuating the gas exchange valves (4) of an internal combustion engine, which is simple in design and reliable, comprising a camshaft (3) driven by the crankshaft (1) of an internal combustion engine via momentum transmission elements (2) and a device for modifying the phase ratio between crankshaft and camshaft (1; 3). To this end, the momentum transmission elements (2) disposed between the crankshaft (1) and the camshaft (3) are provided with a momentum-disrupting or modifying switch device. Said switch device effects a complete momentum transmission in the first switch position and no momentum transmission or a modified momentum transmission in the second switch position.
