[Also in Division A5] The invention comprises compounds of formula wherein R is C 1-3 alkyl, R 1 is H, Me or Et, and R 2 -R 6 are H or C 1-5 alkyl (at least 1 of R 1 - R 6 being alkyl), provided that when R 1 is H and R 4 is H or Me, then at least 1 of R 2 -R 6 is alkyl. These compounds are prepared from (1) their N-substituted derivatives, by removal of the N-attached groups; (2) the corresponding phenol or its salt, by reaction with RR 1 CHX, where X is CH(NH 2 )CH 2 -Y (Y being a reactive ester group) or 2-aziridinyl; (3) the corresponding imine, oxime or hydrazone, by reduction. Racemates of the above formula may be resolved using D-3-bromocamphor-8- sulphonic acid or dibenzoyl-D-tartaric acid.
