[Also in Division C7] Nickel hydroxide is formed on a porous sintered nickel plaque by anodic oxidation in two stages in the first of which the electrolyte is a solution of sodium bicarbonate and the current density is so high that passivation of the nickel would occur before the attainment of maximum capacity if the oxidation were continued and in the second of which the plaque is subjected to preferably no more than six successive cycles of charge and discharge in a solution of an alkali metal carbonate preferably K 2 CO 3 and the current density in the charge in any cycle should preferably not exceed that in the previous cycle by more than 15%. The first stage is preferably continued until the plaque attains from 0À4 to 0À5 times its estimated final capacity, and the current density in the first cycle of the second stage in A/dm.<SP>2</SP> is preferably numerically equal to the capacity in Ah/dm.<SP>2</SP> attained by the plaque in the first stage. |
