Fibrous materials (paper, felt, etc.) are improved in wear moisture and abrasion resistance by impregnation with 0.001-0.5% of a water-sol. polymer containing >=45% of quaternary ammonium groups and 0.5-100% of a solution or dispersion of a linear polymer. The first polymer, which acts as an anchor layer for the second, has in the salt form a viscosity corresponding to a mol. wt. >=300000, and contains 1-55 mol-% of the unit: -CH2.CR.CO.O.A.NR2R3 and 45-100 mol-% of the quaternary unit: -CH2.CR.CO.O.A.NR1R2R3X, where R = H or Me; A = -(CH2)2-, -(CH2)3-, or -CH2.CHMe-; R2, R3 Me or Et; R1 = beta-hydroxyethyl, beta-hydroxypropyl or gamma-hydroxypropyl; X = a cation |
