METHOD AND MACHINE FOR JOINING HOT BILLETS

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and a machine for joining hot billets wherein a preceding billet and a following billet are joined stably and satisfactorily owing to an appropriate clamp load without any flaw remaining on the surface of the billet so that any flaw is not found on such a material requiring strict surface properties as a cold rolled steel sheet. SOLUTION: The preceding billet S1 and the following billet S2 which are to be rolled are respectively nipped and supported by means of two clamps 4 and 5 having projections 15 on the faces opposed to the billets S1 and S2, and the end of the preceding billet S1 and the end of the following billet S2 are joined by butting to each other. At this time the projections 15 are sunk into the billets S1 and S2 by the nipping and supporting. The minimum angleαformed by a tangent in contact with an indented surface and a line intersecting the surface of the billet at a right angle is in the range between 70 degrees and 90 degrees, and indentations of 0.1 mm or more and less than 0.5 mm in depth are caused.
