A track tamping machine (1) comprising a tamping (12) and lifting/lining unit (13) arranged on a machine frame (2) with undercarriages and a levelling and/or lining reference system (18) which incorporates a reference basis (17) supported at either end on the track via feeler rollers for presetting a required track position and a measuring system (27) for measuring the vertical and/or transverse shifts of the track. The reference basis (17) is formed by the machine frame (2) while the feeler rollers are formed by the undercarriages (3) of the machine (1) and the measuring system (27) is designed to measure the shifting of the track relative to the machine frame (2).
