Method for emulating or functionally testing a first microprocessor (34) in a functional environment comprising a number of peripherals (32) and one or more internal communication buses (36). Testing is executed using a second processor (10) with the following steps: deactivation of the first processor, utilization of one or more external communication buses for communication between the two processors and the peripherals and activation of the second microprocessor. Independent claims are made for a circuit (3) integrating a first microprocessor and peripherals and having means for deactivating the processor core, while making an internal communications bus (36) accessible from outside the circuit and a microprocessor emulator.
