Substituted indeno (1,2-b) indol-10(5H)-one derivatives (I) are new. Substituted indeno (1,2-b) indol-10(5H)-one derivatives of formula (I), their optical isomers and acid or base addition salts, are new: R = H, alkenyl or alkyl optionally substituted by COOH or NRaRb; Ra, Rb = H or alkyl, or together complete a heterocycle; R1 - R8 = H, alkenyl(oxy), (aryl)alkyl, (aryl)alkoxy, COOH, acyloxy or arylcarbonyloxy, or two adjacent groups R1 - R8 together form 1-2C alkylenedioxy; aryl = phenyl, biphenylyl or (tetrahydro)naphthyl (all optionally substituted by halo, alkoxy, (polyhalo)alkyl, NH2, mono- or dialkylamino, NO2, acyl and/or 1-2C alkylenedioxy); and provided that: (i) if R is other than H, then at least one of R1 - R8 is OH or acyloxy; (ii) the compound indeno (1,2-b) indol-10(5H)-one (i.e. (I; R, R1 - R8 = H) is excluded; and (iii) alkyl or acyl moieties have 1-6C and alkenyl moieties 2-6C. An Independent claim is also included for the preparation of (I).
