Fire prevention in waste stored in the bunker of a waste incinerator is effected by jetting onto the waste from above an aqueous dispersion quencher, such that: (i) on contact the water content from the quencher is higher than the gas content; optionally (ii) the viscosity of the quencher on contact is 500-50,000 mPa.s; and also optionally (iii) the content of the dispersion in the quencher is 0.01-10 wt.%. An Independent claim is included for a quenching device comprising a container for the quencher; a mixer connected to the container and a water supply; a jetting nozzle connected to the mixer and in the upper part of the bunker; and a pump either integrated into the mixer or between the mixer and the jetting nozzle.
