PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an igniter for an internal combustion engine capable of preventing erroneous ignition and a misfire due to generation of noise to improve starting performance of an engine. SOLUTION: Peak values of consecutive pulses output from a crank angle sensor are input by a microcomputer, and the absolute values of the consecutive input positive and negative peak values are compared. When both values are equal, the pulse is determined to be a normal signal, and when both values are different, the pulse with a smaller peak value is determined to be noise. Thus, when noise P01 and P02 with a peak value exceeding the threshold level are generated, the peak value of the noise P01 is smaller than the peak value of the normal signal P1, so the noise waveform can be discriminated from the normal waveform. Accordingly, the peak values of the crank angle signals are compared and determined at the cranking start of the engine, interrupt of a crank angle signal due to noise can be eliminated so as to prevent erroneous ignition of the engine, and also in the normal ignition after the cranking start, the occurrence of the misfire can be prevented.
