PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a diol compound simply in a high selectivity, especially a 1,3-diol inexpensively and efficiently. SOLUTION: This method for producing a diol compound, especially a 1,3-diol inexpensively and efficiently comprises obtaining a carbonyl compound from a corresponding unsaturated ester simply in high selectivity by using a specific catalyst, subjecting the carbonyl compound to a hydrogenation reaction to give an alcohol compound and then carrying out hydrolyzing an alcohol.
