PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To avoid decrease in the gray scale such as black crush (loss and crush of the gray scale at a dark part) caused by the low limit of the correction degree given to image signals to improve the gray scale because of the restriction relating to circuits such as the dynamic range, bit number or the like in a display device such as a liquid crystal device which uses a lamp or the like as the light source and displays images by the matrix of pixels. SOLUTION: The device is equipped with a controlling means 1 for the light quantity which detects the signal characteristics such as the peak value, average or the like of image signals and can control the quantity of the light to the display device according to the above characteristics and with a controlling means 5 for the amplitude of image signals, which can control the amplitude of the image signals. Image display with preferable gray scale and higher visibility can be obtained by controlling the light quantity and the amplitude of the image signals inputted in the display device as a whole.
