PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polymer composition which is prepared from a hydrophobic monomer and has a higher capability for facilitating the removal of oily substances and hydrophobic substances from a heterogeneous medium than that of a conventionally used oil-absorbent polymer composition. SOLUTION: An oil-absorbent composition comprising an aqueous emulsion polymer formed from 0.01-5 wt.% at least one ionic monomer and 95-99.99 wt.% at least two hydrophobic monomers and optionally at least one cross-linker is provided. Based on its total weight, the composition absorbs at least 20 wt.% at least one oily or hydrophobic substance in a heterogeneous medium.
