PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small-sized projection type display device which is equipped with a reflection type light valve and can suppress overlap between the optical path of incident light and the optical path of projection light in the reflection type light valve and provides a projection image of high picture quality. SOLUTION: The projection type optical display device comprises a light source 101, a illumination optical system 102 which generates illumination light, the reflection type light valve 106 which forms an optical image by reflecting the illumination light, a projection optical system 107 which projects the optical image, and a lens 105 with positive power. The optical axis 115 of the reflection type light valve, the optical axis 113 of the projection optical system, and the optical axis 114 of the positive-power lens are aligned with one another. The illumination optical system 106 is so arranged that the illumination light passes through the positive-power lens 105 and is reflected by the reflection type light valve. The exit pupil 108 of the illumination optical system and the entrance pupil 108 of the illumination optical system are arranged in conjugate relation about the positive-power lens 105. |
