A catalytic converter for the purification of exhaust gas comprising a catalyst carrier (2), a heat-insulating seal layer and a cylindrical metal shell (12) is manufactured by providing an assembly (10) comprised of the catalyst carrier (2), a crystalline alumina fiber mat (4) as the heat-insulating seal layer and a sheet-shaped article (6) and pressing the assembly into the metal shell (12) through a funnel-shaped fixture (14) to render a bulk density of the crystalline alumina fiber mat in use into 0.25-0.60 g/cm<3>.
