Process for cleaning membrane modules (10) used in a water treatment plant comprises: (1) closing the cleaning containers (11, 12) after inserting at least one membrane module; and (2) carrying out the cleaning program which includes mechanical cleaning of the module before spraying with a cleaning agent. An Independent claim is included for a device for carrying out the cleaning process.
