PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image scanner in which resolution of reading can be increased while avoiding increase of size. SOLUTION: The image scanner comprises a body 2 having a specified length, a line sensor 26 disposed in the body 2, a roller 7 supported rotatably in the body 2 to touch a part of a document P while matching the axial direction thereof and the longitudinal direction of the body 2, and a rotary encoder 28 coupled with the roller 7 and measuring the r.p.m. thereof. Document image is read out by means of the line sensor 26 while scanning the document P with the body 2 and the scanning distance of the body 2 is detected based on the output from the rotary encoder 28 at the time of scanning. The rotary encoder 28 comprises a disc 30 having a plurality of slits 19 and supported rotatably, and a photointerrupter 31 for detecting the r.p.m. of the disc 30 wherein the disc 30 is disposed such that the axial direction thereof is different from the axial direction of the roller 7.
