PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an original reader where the effect of dirt stuck to a platen on image data which is read through the platen is suppressed and the quality of a copied image and a transmitted image can be improved in the original reader for reading an original image by a sheet through system. SOLUTION: The reader is provided with a transport means transporting the original along a prescribed original transport route, a scanning member which is fixedly arranged near the original transport route and reads the original image passing through an opposing position and a transparent rotary protection member which is arranged to turn around the scanning member and in which the original is closely transport in the opposing position of the scanning member.
