PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for selectively and industrially advantageously producing a diester of a 1,2-diol useful for a cosmetic, especially the ester of the 1,2-diol having different acyl groups at the 1- and 2-positions. SOLUTION: A fatty acid or a salt thereof is reacted with an epoxide to provide a monoester of the 1,2-diol, and the resultant monoester is acylated to provide the objective diester of the 1,2-diol.
