PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a magnified image pickup unit free from trouble of exchanging lenses and adjusting the intensity of illuminating light every time the magnification is changed. SOLUTION: The magnification of the lens (8) of an image forming optical system (5) for magnifying the image of an object to be observed (4) changes by moving the lens from the low magnification imaging position (PL) to the high magnification imaging position (PH). An illumination system (7) which irradiates an object to be observed (4) with illuminating light is provided with a low magnification imaging illumination means (20L) which illuminates a low magnification imaging area (AL), and a high magnification imaging illumination means (20H) which illuminates a high magnification imaging area (AH) with high illuminance. An illumination switching means (21) which is interlocked with the movement of the image forming optical system (5) switches automatically the low magnification imaging illumination means (20L) and the high magnification imaging illumination means (20H) and turns either illumination on is provided.
