PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal optical device, capable of selectively reflecting a plurality of colors different in wavelengths from one voluminal space and further displaying a bright white color with efficient reflection of R(red), G(green) and B(blue), and to provide a method for manufacturing the device. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal optical device is constructed by providing a light control layer 5, including a transparent solid material and a liquid crystal between a pair of substrates 1, 2. The light control layer is provided with plural kinds of periodic structure, in which he ratio of the transparent solid material and the liquid crystal varies periodically. Furthermore, the periodic structure has spacings of the periods 6, 7 different from each other.
