PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image processing device which can accurately discriminate image types in an easy way and can prevent the expansion of the circuit scale. SOLUTION: This image processing device has a main scanning direction decision part and a sub-scanning direction decision part which determine to which area a target pixel belongs, after obtaining feature amount by extracting the image data in the main scanning direction and the sub-scanning direction that contain containing the target pixel from a block consisting of a plurality of pixels that were extracted from input image data. The main scanning direction decision part and the sub-scanning direction decision part are respectively provided with a maximum density difference calculation part 33 which calculates the maximum density difference using a minimum density value and a maximum density value determined from those image data obtained for the main scanning direction and the sub-scanning direction respectively, a total density complexity calculation part 34 which calculates the total density complexity based on the sum of the absolute values of density differences between adjacent image data, and a decision region setting part 35 which classifies the target pixel into character/halftone region, or base/photography region based on the maximum density difference, the total density complexity, and a first and second thresholds that have been set in advance.
