PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image reader capable of improving image quality in regard to intermittent reading by efficiently using a storing means (memory means) for image information in an image scanner capable of reading both faces. SOLUTION: This image reader having a first reading means for reading an image from one face of an original, a second reading means for reading an image from the other face of the original, a first storing means for storing image data prepared by the first reading means, and a second storing means for storing image data prepared by the second reading means, predicts the amount of data of image data to be prepared when reading the image by using only the first reading means and stores the image data in the second storing means when the amount of data surpasses the storage capacity of the first storing means.
