PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide magnetic powder which can be kept high in dispersion properties even if it is micronized and a magnetic recording medium whose S/N ratio can be improved enough and surface electric resistance can be kept low. SOLUTION: Magnetic recording medium magnetic powder 103 is formed of hexagonal ferrite particles 105 coated with carbon 107. The magnetic recording medium using the magnetic powder 103 is composed of a magnetic layer 101 containing the magnetic powder 103, and a nonmagnetic support 801 on which the magnetic layer 101 is formed. The magnetic powder 103 is composed of the hexagonal ferrite particles 105 coated with 5 to 50 wt.% carbon 107. The specific surface area of the carbon 107 is 100 to 400 m2/g and its DBP oil absorption 40 to 100 cc/100 g. The hexagonal ferrite particle 105 is 10 to 80 nm in hexagonal diameter, the ratio of diameter to thickness of the particle 105 is 1 to 10, and the particle 105 has a specific surface area of 20 to 150 m2/g. |
