In a process to control the operation of an internal combustion engine (10), data is collected describing the operating irregularities (LU). The data is examined to determine if and when pre-defined conditions (LUSWU, LUWO) are met, and if the operating irregularities (LU) do not match these conditions. The engine (10) non-stationary operating modes are then varied. The engine operates under super-stoichiometric, stoichiometric, or sub- stoichiometric conditions. The engine torque target values are calculated from which a torque gradient is derived. The gradient is compared with a threshold value (TQSW) and the operating mode is altered if the target threshold value is passed. If the torque gradient is negative, the operating conditions are switched from a sub-stoichiometric or stoichiometric ratio of fuel to air, to a super-stoichiometric ratio.
|
