PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To satisfactorily switch the carrying direction of sheets even when the sheets are carried in such a state that the rear end of a preceding sheet is overlapped by a specified amount with the top end of a following sheet. SOLUTION: This image forming device comprises a sheet rear end restricting means 4 disposed in a sheet carrying route 3 between a sheet feed means 1 and an image forming means 2 and a carrying direction switching means 51 disposed in a branch part 5 for branching the sheet carrying route 3 into a first sheet carrying route 56 and a second sheet carrying route 57 on the downstream side of the image forming means and switching the carrying direction of the sheets passed through the image forming means. When the sheets are carried continuously, the sheet rear end restricting means 4 restricts the rear end position of the preceding sheet to either of the sheet carrying routes 3 to determine the positional relation thereof with the top end of the following sheet. Based on the positional relation of the sheets determined by the sheet rear end restricting means 4, the carrying direction switching means 51 switches the sheet carrying direction so as to load the sheets into either of the first and second sheet carrying routes 56 and 57.
