PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyester film for a magnetic recording medium, which obtains a DVC tape less in DO(drop out) even if the DVC tape is manufactured from the rainy season to the summer season. SOLUTION: In the polyester film for the magnetic recording medium, the surface roughness Ra of one surface A of the polyester film is 2 to 5 nm, the deposited quantity of polyester decomposition product from the surface B opposite to the surface A is <=3.0 mg/m2 when the polyester film is subjected to thermal treatment at 120 deg.C for 10 min after the polyester film is stored at 25 deg.C under the atmosphere of 90% RH for 18 hr, and a ferromagnetic metal thin film layer is provided on the outer side of the surface A.
