A heat exchanger for use in building ventilation systems to transfer heat from warm air extracted from the building to cold air supplied to building is described. The heat exchanger includes a plurality of plate members, lower type and upper type, stacked parallel above one another to define two separate fluid flow paths between alternate pairs of adjacent plate members and contained within a base plate and a top plate, two side plates and four inlet grilles. To ensure the zigzag walls and channels do not nest with one another and restrict flow, the pattern of zigzag walls is interrupted over the surface of the lower plate by several pips located in channels between internal walls. The walls in the region of the pips is reduced in height to form notches so that air flowing along the channels can flow through the notches into adjacent channels and is not restricted by the presence of the pips.
