The device has a base module (12), a pneumatic cylinder (16) coupled to the base module, a piston with a first welding electrode (30) connected to its outer end for reciprocal movement from a first end of the cylinder, an arm (14) attached to the base module with a second welding electrode (36) on the other end forming a gap between the electrodes and a programmable controler controling movement of the first electrode in programmable increments. Independent claims are also included for the following: an arrangement for implementing the method of controling the position of a welding gun's tip and a programmable welding system.
