Benzofuran derivatives represented by the general formula (I) or salts thereof: (I) [wherein R1 is phenyl or hydrogen; k is 0 or 1; m, n, o, p, and q are each independently an integer of 0 to 5; and R2 and R3 are each independently hydrogen or hydroxyl, or alternatively R2 and R3 together represent oxygen, with the proviso that k, q, and m, or n, o, and p are simultaneously 0]. The compounds inhibit the phosphorylation of STAT 6 and a re useful in the treatment or prevention of allergic diseases.
