The use of a combination of polyvinyl alcohol (I) and alkali metal borate (II) is claimed for increasing the viscosity of liquid detergents. Independent claims are included for: (a) the use of (I) for increasing the viscosity of liquid detergents containing (II); (b) the use of (II) for increasing the viscosity of liquid detergents containing (I); and (c) liquid detergent compositions containing surfactants, thickeners and optionally other conventional components of detergent or cleaning compositions, where the thickener consists of a combination of (I) and (II).
