METHOD OF SMOOTHING DIAMOND FILM AND METHOD OF MANUFACTURING DIAMOND COATED MEMBER

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently smooth the surfaces of diamond films with high accuracy even for diamond coated cutting tools having cutting edges of intricate three- dimensional shapes. SOLUTION: End mill intermediate products 36 coated with the diamond films on the surfaces are arranged within a chamber 22 of arc ion plating equipment 20 and an arc discharge is effected with a prescribed metallic target 24 as a cathode, by which metallic ions are released from the metallic target 24 and simultaneously a negative bias voltage is impressed to the end mill intermediate products 36 and the metal ions are bombarded at a high speed to the surfaces of the end mill intermediate products 36 and the surfaces of the diamond films are smoothed.
