PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To highly precisely detect light reflecting characteristics of the obverse and the reverse of a sheet material such as a recording medium by inexpensive constitution, and to exactly discriminate a kind of the sheet. SOLUTION: This device is provided with light reflecting characteristics detecting means 105, 106, 109 for detecting the light reflecting characteristics of the obverse and the reverse of the sheet material 104, and a discrimination means for discriminating the kind of the sheet material 104 based on the light reflecting characteristics of the obverse and the reverse detected by the light reflecting characteristics detecting means 105. The light reflecting characteristics detecting means 105 is provided with at least one light projection and photo-reception means 105 comprising a light projection part and a photo-reception part for receiving light from the projection part reflected by the sheet material 104 to transmit a prescribed output signal, and a moving means for moving the sheet material 104 and the light projection and photo-reception means relatively to position the light projection and photo-reception means selectively between the first detection position for detecting the light reflecting characteristics of the obverse of the sheet material 104 and the second detection position for detecting the light reflecting characteristics of the reverse of the sheet material 104.
