PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for plating the surface of a piston ring is provided in which extends life time of the piston ring and perform heat resisting plating having a high hardness by increasing thickness of a covering layer. CONSTITUTION: The apparatus for plating the surface of a piston ring comprises a heating furnace(2) the inner part of which is maintained to the atmospheric pressure state and heated to a certain temperature; a graphite support(6) which is rotationally installed at the lower side of the heating furnace(2), and on the upper side of which a matrix piston ring(4) is installed; a nitrogen injection port(8) which is formed on one side of the heating furnace(2) to inject nitrogen into the heating furnace(2); a titanium tetrachloride injection port(10) which is formed on one side of the heating furnace(2) to inject titanium tetrachloride into the heating furnace(2); a nitrogen injection port(12) which is installed on one side of the heating furnace(2) to inject hydrogen into the heating furnace(2); and an exhaust port(14) which is installed on one side of the heating furnace(2) to exhaust gas inside the heating furnace(2).
