A karaoke machine and a method for selecting a background image in the karaoke machine are provided to match the background image to a song by automatically selecting a background image file out of a plurality of files having the same theme with the song file randomly or in a predetermined order, or allowing a user to select one file out of a list showing the background image files having the same theme as the song file. A method for selecting a background image of karaoke machine comprises the steps of: preparing a karaoke machine in which a plurality of song files each having song theme information in a header area and a plurality of background image files each having background theme information in a header area are stored in a memory of the karaoke machine(S10); if one of the song file is selected by a user, selecting a background image file having the same theme information as the song file and reproducing it together with the song(S14,S16).
