PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize an imaging device having a wide dynamic range that can obtain optimum contrast over a wide range from a dark object with a small dynamic range to a bright object with a wide dynamic range. SOLUTION: The imaging device of this invention is provided with a means (1) that sets an exposure to an image pickup element at least in two stages, a means (14) that detects an integral value or a peak value of the lightness of an entire image or for a prescribed area resulting from a 2nd video signal obtained by picking up an object with a small exposure, a means (13) that controls 1st and 2nd prescribed values and a compression rate or an expansion rate of a companding means, and an adder means (10) that sums a signal from a compression means and a signal from the companding means to output a video signal with a wide dynamic range.
