PURPOSE: A power saving type automatic transformer apparatus and method is provided to save energy by minimizing power consumption at the primary coil and automatically changing capacity in accordance with the size of load. CONSTITUTION: An automatic transformer apparatus comprises a transformer(50) for supplying input current, a secondary coil(51) for consuming current, a sensor(52) for sensing the load amount of the secondary coil, a micro processor(53) for performing control operation responsive to the signal input from the sensor, and contact and switching sections(54 to 56) for switching the input current in accordance with the signal input from the micro processor. A method comprises a first step of setting a transformer for supplying current into A mode; a second step of detecting the amount of load used in the secondary coil; a third step of permitting the micro processor to transmit a signal for converting the current being supplied; a fourth step of operating contact and switching sections; and a fifth step of converting the transformer into B mode.
