New antibiotic altamiramycin, showing strong activity against Gram positive bacteria, obtained by culturing Streptomyces sp. HKI 0179 (DSM 13059)

A new compound (I), designated 'altamiramycin', has a molecular weight of 1183, an empirical formula of C61H83NO22 and characteristic physicochemical properties (i.e. ( alpha )(D) +39.1 deg ; specific mass, infrared, ultraviolet/visible and 13C- and 1H-nuclear magnetic resonance spectra; and specific thin layer chromatographic properties). An Independent claim is included for the preparation of (I), by culturing Streptomyces sp. HKI 0179 (DSM 13059) in a nutrient medium until (I) has accumulated in the broth, then isolating (I).
