PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a water-borne coating composition capable of forming a film having excellent hot water, weather and alkali resistances, etc. SOLUTION: This water-borne coating composition comprises the following components. (I) an aqueous resin having hydrolyzable silyl groups in the molecule and (II) a cagelike ammonium silicate compound obtained by reacting (a) 0.5-1.5 mol of an organosilane compound comprising an organoslilane represented by formula (1): Si(OR1)4 [wherein, R1 is a 1-5C alkyl group] and an organosilane represented by formula (2): R2Si(OR3)3 [wherein, R2 is a 1-8C organic group; and R3 is a 1-5C alkyl group] in [(0.3-1.0):(0.7-0)] molar ratio of both with (b) 1.0 mol of a quaternary ammonium compound in the presence of water.
