A method used in recording a three-dimensional image uses the steps of measuring a distance from a camera 104 to a subject 108, recording a first image from a first position 112, prompting a user to move to a second position 116 and taking a second image from the second position. The method may use verbal or visual prompts or directions, e.g. in the form of arrows in the camera viewfinder or a sound or voice signal, to direct the camera user to the optimum position for 3-D imaging (see Figure 4). A processor uses the first and second images and the first and second changes in camera position and/or rotations to generate a three-dimensional image.
