PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an optical device in which an optical element capable of emitting or receiving light on its sides can be satisfactorily protected with a resin or the like. SOLUTION: An optical unit 13 is provided with a light emitting element 17 formed approximately cubic and capable of emitting light from its sides, a first lead frame 33 having this element 17 on its end face, a protector 35 formed to cover the surroundings of the element 17 and formed of a translucent resin, and a second lead frame 34 connected to the top surface of the element 17 via a wire W. These parts are integrally packaged with a packaging resin. In this unit, a recessed part 38 for mounting the element 17 is formed on the end surface 33a of the lead frame 33. The part 38 is formed into a groove so that the sides of the element 17 to mount on the bottom surface 38a of the part 38 can be opened, and is formed so that the surface 38a expands outward wider than the thickness of the lead frame 33. |
